Founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1950, the Gamma Tetarton Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa brings us together with a shared commitment to the belief that the best technical education also demands integrity, service, and genuine human connection.
The Cardinal Principles
Brotherhood
The bond formed in the chapter house at RPI does not end at graduation. It is a commitment to one another that spans decades and distances, renewed every time brothers gather, mentor, or simply reach out. Since 1950, more than 800 men have joined this brotherhood, and each one carries it forward.
Scholarship
Academic excellence is central to the Phi Sig experience. The chapter strives to provide a supportive learning environment and aims to be among the top Greek chapters at RPI by GPA. This commitment extends beyond active brothers, through scholarships and mentorship that support those who come after.
Character
Phi Sigma Kappa asks its members to lead lives of integrity, to serve others, and to engage with the world beyond the chapter house. That means showing up for the Troy community, for each other, and for the values the fraternity was founded on.
The Way Forward
At the 75th Anniversary Gala in October 2025, the chapter and alumni association presented a shared vision for the years ahead. These seven pillars guide everything the association does, from the capital campaign to regional events to community investment.
1
Sustainable Membership Growth
Active membership of 30 to 35 brothers, thoughtful transition planning, and adapting to the evolving landscape of Greek life at RPI.
2
Scholarship
A supportive academic environment, a target of Top 5 Greek Chapter GPA at RPI, and a culture that takes achievement seriously.
3
Alumni Engagement
A monthly newsletter, regional gatherings across the country, and ongoing connection between active brothers and the wider network.
4
Capital Improvement Projects
A chapter house at 316 Congress Street that is safe, attractive, and competitive, maintained and improved through the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign.
5
Community Development and Engagement
Expanding the Mt. Ida Micro Grant Program, hosting community events, and deepening ties with the Troy neighborhood the chapter calls home.
6
Build Strong Relationships
Active partnership with RPI, the Troy community, Phi Sigma Kappa Nationals, and the alumni association, built on consistency and trust.
7
Leadership Development
The annual camping retreat, active participation in RPI student government and IFC, and a culture that produces leaders.
Our Community Programs
The chapter’s commitment to character and service is expressed most concretely through two ongoing programs, one supporting the Troy neighborhood where the chapter house stands, and one honoring the commitment to scholarship of a brother whose spirit lives on in those who follow him.
Mt. Ida Micro Grant Program
When the chapter moved into 316 Congress Street in 2011, it made a commitment not just to the building but to the neighborhood around it. The Mt. Ida Micro Grant Program was established that same year to put that commitment into practice. It provides small grants to local residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations working to improve the quality of life in the Mt. Ida neighborhood of Troy.
Applications are accepted each spring and evaluated by a committee of active brothers, alumni, and community members. In 2026 the program awarded 8 grants totaling $12,000, with individual grants of $1,500. Since its founding the program has invested meaningfully in the community that surrounds the chapter house and given active brothers a direct way to practice the principle of service.
Donations to the Mt. Ida Micro Grant Program are processed through TAP Inc, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and are fully tax-deductible.
Istvan Moritz Memorial Scholarship
In loving memory of Istvan Moritz, Class of 2015, who lent his energy to the transformation of our brotherhood. Istvan embodied the best of what Phi Sigma Kappa asks of its members, and his loss is felt by everyone who knew him. This scholarship was established by his brothers to honor him in the most fitting way they knew how: by encouraging the same qualities in those who follow.
Two scholarships are awarded each year. One recognizes the brother who has shown the most improved GPA, reflecting the value Phi Sig places on growth and perseverance. The other recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, or service. Together they carry forward what Istvan stood for.
